The following video footage of a great white shark was recently shot during a fishing trip 25 miles from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Matt Garrett used his iPhone to capture what he and his friends believed to be a shark 18 feet in length. Although sightings of white sharks are rare off the coast of North Carolina, it is known they migrate through these waters during winter months as they head south towards Florida and even up into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs published findings about the migratory behavior of western Atlantic white sharks earlier this year. Dr. Greg Skomal and his team of the Division of Marine Fisheries successfully tagged 5 great white sharks with satellite tags off the coast of Cape Cod in 2010 and were able to collect data on their movements.
